Rome : Total War SWAP Game.

First off, oh hai!

Secondly, whats a Swap Game? Well for Rome : TW in particular it's basically playing through the Campaign for a set number of turns, saving the game then passing it onto someone else to play for a certain amount of turns.

Now, I doubt anyone other than Myself and Pidgeon have R:TW but the invitation is open for anyone who does, to join us.

If anyone has / get's it your welcome to join. Though H/M Diffculty will be hard for beginners we can make a new one and Myself and Pidgeon will continue this one between ourselves.

Now we're going to be keeping a record of what we are doing, it depends on what Pidgeon decides to do but im going to provide a few pictures with my reports, because everyone likes pictures, no cake will be provided.

Im posting it up here cause I think it'll be a cool thing to do and who knows maybe you'll have fun following us on our conquest of the land... or our untimely defeat? We'll see how it goes.

haeZen,
haeZen

This will be my first AAR so if im unclear anywhere or you'd like to know something then just ask.. I probably won't give you an answer. This beginning post will be quite long to introduce those of you who have never played it before to some of the basics of R:TW. Later on in the AAR I will not be recording certain unnecessary things such as battle's with Rebels I will just show the stats. Anyway now that thats out the way, to the the AAR itself!

So the beginning, this screen is basically the faction selection screen and it allows you to choose the options that will relate to your campaign. I have chosen the settings that I described above.

This is our starting land to which we shall expand and rule an empire from, it's not much but, stepping stones people, stepping stones!

We've just started and the Senate is bossing us about, I don't think they realise we're nobody's bitch! But right now  they've got a bigger army and if we decline we don't get rewards, so we're total bitches for now.  Sad

So I start off by taking all the garrisons out the city and merging every unit I have into what shall be known as... Armeh! For which I shall conquer the nearby settlement, Apollonia. You'll see the red faces on my settlements, that represents public order, it's low - Obviously - since I pulled the garrisons out, however I will recruit a Peasant unit for both and it'll be fine for next turn. I also build a Shrine to Mar in each settlement, this increase's Law which inturn affects order, also with the later bigger temple's it grants me Exp. bonus to troops trained there. Which is always useful.

I end turn. During my 2nd turn the shrine's have been completed so I set out to building Trader's to boost our economy, I also move Armeh into the Bireme to transport them over to Apollonia and attack it, it's a low level settlement and has no walls so instead of using a turn to build siege equipment I can attack straight away... so I do!

Army Strength Ratio of 100:9? No Armeh could lose to such nubs!

This is the pre-battle phase, where you can listen to a General's rousing - No, not arousing you sicko - speech and then set your army into formation, I've gone for a strange formation.. a line basically, Cavalry on the far Flank Hastati at Front and Velites - Skirmishers -  behind the Hastati.

I start the battle and now I can see where the enemy has set up. He has 3 units. General unit is Militia Hoplite's at the front of the city near me and he has 2 Peltast units at the city centre. Not the smartest idea having the General fight my entire Armeh. I move to engage him.

Here is our glorious Faction Leader who will lead our Armeh to victory this day and many more to come!

I begin by make my Hastati throw Pila at the enemy General. He doesn't seem to like this so he enters a Phalanx and begins to advance on my Hastati.

Phalanx's are lethal against units in front and can only truly be countered by missle units and other pikes, however they are weak on the flanks and rear.

So I flanked his ass and whipped it raw for his over-confidence!

I walk over his dead body moments later.

His last remaining man in the units tries to go out with a bang but ends up collecting a ticket to the river Styx.

I send my Velites around the East Flank of the city hoping to hit the Peltast's in the side while I engage them in melee with my Hastati for maximum effect.

I reform my Hastati for a frontal attack to bait the peltast's.

These fool's think they can contend with Armeh!

Doesn't 'exactly' go to plan, they charge for my Velites instead, I charge with my Hastati. Not before I notice a plan I had concocted earlier, has become all the more potent.

Mah horsies! I had sent them to the Western Flank of the city at the beginning as I had no desire to fight Hoplites with Cavalry, peltast's going East, Cavalry from the West? Yup, im now full charging them... straight in the ass!

As you can see my horse spat on a peltast and they began to retreat, but the Tsunami hadn't arrived yet.

They were crushed instantly.

The Brutii's first victory and conquest!

After taking a settlement you get the option of:

Occupying - Take a small amount of denarii and keep's everything in shape, allows quicker settlement growth.
Enslave - Which takes some of the population and add's it to your capital and any other city with a Governer in. Gain moderate amount of denarii.
Exterminate - Self-explanitory really, some provinces just won't like you so you have to exterminate 3/4 of the population and you get alot of denarii.

However this settlement is small and I'll have no problem controlling it, I occupy.

5000 denarii for wiping out Rebels? Easy money. I spend it on building Militia Barrack's in both cities so I can train Hastati. They shall help in my conquering of Greece.

I pull Armeh out of Apollonia, to go north toward another settlement called Salona. I have poor order in Apollonia now, but again I shall recruit a peasant unit to keep order. I also send my Diplomat to Macedon to secure Trade rights and Map Information and hopefully an Alliance, as that will come in handy fighting the Greeks. My Spy also takes a look around.

Another mission, this time they want me to blockade a port for a single turn, sounds easy enough. I send my Bireme fleet over to blockade the port which is in Sicily, not far at all.

I find Salona also has no walls, I will crush it beneath our Roman might.

Aaah a suitable husband? Well he has no stats nor traits, he sucks basically and I would refuse were it not for him being 16 years of age, that means alot, alot of time to bend him to my iron will!

My new guy marrying one of my daughters, bless. Gimme lots of good sons ffs.

War!! Our first war has begun on a major faction, Greece. Most likely incited from our blockading the previously mentioned port. No matter I intend to crush them anyway.

I assault Salona straight away.

The odds are not tipped in my favour so heavily this time, yet I still hold a major 5:1 advantage.

Whoops! I accidently hit Auto-Resolve, I gained a victory but lost far more troops than should be accepted, schoolboy error.

I occupy for the same reasons given for Apollonia.

Eugh! A Greek temple? Giving me a 40% Culture penalty to Public order. I destroy it!

This is a welcome substitute, a Shrine to our great Queen Juno, she provides us with a trade boost, which equals more money. I like Juno.

Not enough population to recruit some peasants... Bah! The unrest is pretty high so looks like my Armeh is going to make camp here for this turn.

My Diplomat reaches Larissa, a Macedon settlement and to possibly secure an Alliance. I try my luck and demand some extra denarii.

Ha! They accept! That's a slight boost to the coffers, silly Macedonians, there time will come when I rid Greece of... Greece.

The Senate predicts my next maneuver and decide to reward me for doing so. I can accept that, in fact I've got alot of time for the Senate when they do that.

And I somehow finished a different mission straight after. Sweet.

My Spy reaches Thermon, my target, a Greek city. Only one unit there and it's a family heir, what a catch.

The fools of Greece believe they are in a position to demand me to become there puppet? Pah, I refuse coldly, then offer the same to them! Surely they see there impending defeat?

They however refuse as expected, worth a try, always nice collaring a new bitch. Very Happy

Ah crap! I wasn't paying attention and a simple Malitia hoplite unit attack Apollonia, all I have is 1 Peasant unit and no walls. No chance. I auto resolve knowing my defeat.

Now that we've lost Apollonia's income I have now driven us into debt. Feck.

I attack Apollonia with Armeh, I know I'll crush them. But in the one turn it took for me to get there they built a wall, I should've done the same, ah well always casualties in war. Here come the seige weapons!

I missed a few screens here sorry, but basically I smashed open the gate with a ram and as shown here chucked pila at the Sun apparently then they came back down to land on these unfortunate Hoplites.

The Hoplites pulled back after heavy casualties. Heeeere's Rooomans!

I stack my Hastati in the street and wait for the Hoplites to come back.

But instead they send Peltasts to chuck some Javelins.

Unluckily for them, I can chuck pila back.  Very Happy

Then I slaughter them in melee.

Meanwhile my Cavalry go around the city and attack the rear.

Bye peltast's, the Hoplites take no notice.

Till I crush them.

You nay not see it under the might of Armeh but this is supposed to show the enemy General dying.

The rest of his men scatter but they crumble under Armeh's might.

The end result was never in doubt.

Apollonia is our's once again!

Hurray, I bring us out of debt! We are once again churning out a profit.

I end turn and then immediately send out Armeh to conquer Thermon I recruit a unit of peasant's to keep order while Armeh is out conquering.

Ack! Goddamn Gauls! They've sent a single unit of Warband to attack Salona, however that's all they need, I have no walls and just one unit of peasants. I didn't expect them to attack me as they were allied with the House of Julii, another Roman family. Trecherous Barbarians, I'll have my revenge. 10 fold. I lose Salona.

I am hated with a passion it seems. They'll come to around soon enough. Or they die, quite simple really.

The battle begins in Thermon, I've made a major blunder! Not paying attention I didn't realise that the garrison in Thermon has been reinforced.. termendously! It has gone from 1 unit to around 14 making the Greek army number in the 1000's. Whereas I am at around 788 men. They have the numerical advantage but numbers do not win battles. Strategy does. However I am not a great strategist so greater number's is quite a big advantage over me.  Confused

I apologize for I missed taking quie a few pictures of the opening battle. I broke down the gate with a battering ram then proceeded to throw Javelins at them from outside the walls. There entire army save 1 unit of peltast's - Which is located in the town centre - are at the front walls. but have moved down a side street out of Javelin and pila range.

The enemy army consist's of about 1/4 Hoplite, 1/2 Cavalry and the last 1/4 of Peltast's with 1 unit of Peasants chucked in somewhere. I cannot beat them with my force so I have to be smart. My strategy is to send my Hastati head on to attack the enemy army and use my Velite's to soften the enemy up during the fighting, meanwhile my cavalry run straight down the main road and attack the town centre, if I can hold it for 3 minutes, I win.

Here you see the peltast unit and my cavalry running down the main road. You can also just about make out my outnumbered Hastati in the background.

As I said, they are extremely outnumbered. My Hastati get destroyed faster than I had expected, they mass rout.

I sent in my Velites for some meat but they rout much faster due to there comrades retreating. I am left with just my cavalry against mass hoplites and enemy cavalry, not looking good.

Meanwhile my cavalry decimated the peltast unit in the centre and it's now mine, now for these 3 long minutes... Maybe they'll ignore me? They don't they send all there Cavalry, I chew them up however. But they reset the countdown timer.

Alas, the Hoplites are on the way to the centre.

I dare not risk a head-on battle with Hoplites in Phalanx. I give up my position and flee to the gates.

But wait! The God Ares seems pleased with the temples I have built him and has given me an opportunity it seems, the enemy Faction Leader, outside the walls.. and alone. I go straight for him.

I also send a Family Member to slaughter some Peasants on the way. Very Happy

Ah you see the sword icon on the left? That shows I have just killed the enemy Faction Leader, wasn't fast enough with the screenshot.

Do they take me for a weakling? They send 1 unit of hoplites up the main street towards me, however I have concocted a plan for these overconfident fools.

I have split my force into 3 they are at the East and West end of this crossroad here. I wait to see where he turns to. He goes West.

I smash him from the East into his unprotected rear, his troops desperately try to turn around then I smash him from the West, he rout's almost immediately but none get out of this alive.

Oooh look, some peasants fleeing from merely watching the slaughter. I will now give them another reason.

None survive the charge.

Again they send just one unit, if this keeps up victory will be easy.

However I still have to deal with this. 1 Mercenary Hoplite unit and 1 Militia Hoplite unit, they don't seem to want to come after me so I must go to them. Also the remnants of the enemy Faction Leader's Bodyguard unit is here, consisting of only 3 survivors though.  Wink

This T-junction suits my strategy perfectly.

They turn West.

I crush them from the East.

They rout instantly and my 3 unit's from the West never even got to the action that's how fast they routed. Turns out's my Hastati and Velite's did do something, they exhausted the enemy troops meaning they have lower Morale resulting in quicker routs, my advantage has just been upped severely as my troops are all fresh.

Here my group from the West are desperate for some kills.

The remnants of the Faction Leaders Bodyguards charged me and got totally owned. Now I do something daring and charge the Hoplites. However numerous things are in my favour. The are still exhausted from the battle earlier, they are showing me there backs and they are not in Phalanx. I send 1 group to charge into them

The other group I manouvered round the Hoplites and then pincered them, forced to resort to swords in the close quarters they lost there advantage and were easily slaughtered.

Victory! But at a high cost, a Pyrrhic victory if anything, but Thermon is now mine and this will be a good forward base for our advance into the heart of Greece.

The Senate have noted my hard fought victory and have awarded me with 5000 denarii, this will help in replenishing my army and paying for future conquest's.

They immediately assign me another, I move my Bireme fleet near Sicily towards Sparta to blockade the port, they will reach the port in 2 turns.

After I end turn a big Greek army appears to be heading towards Thermon, this could be disastrous as my army is still recovering from the previous battle.

Luckily the army moves away towards Athens and seems to be going for the Macedonian units stationed near Larissa. A relief at best.

I take my suitable husband from earlier and put together a small Hastati / Equites devision for him to lead, his first mission is to exterminate these Rebel scum loitering in our mainland. I like to think of them as Chavs.

They fight like them too, I slaughter them with minimal casualties. No survivors.

I garrison this army into my Bireme, he will be transported over to take back Salona from those Barbaric Gauls.

My Bireme's get to the Port and earn me a nice 1000 denarii, courtesy of the Senate.

My Capital, Tarentum has grown in population to a point where I can consider upgrading it to a City, this will grant me acess to higher Tier buildings and allow me to train better troops and build better economy buildings.

Oh very nice, Games will be held in my honour at someone else's expense? How can I turn down such a generous offer?

I end my final turn. It is now Pidgeons turn.

Pidgeon the situation currently is our current settlements are churning out a profit, however we need to get Salona back, every little helps, our newest General is on the Bireme nearby to land near there and take it back, only 1 Gaul unit resides in Salona, presumably the Warband unit that took it over, should be no problem with the force provided.

Tarentum and Colton can produce Hastati in our mainland as can Thermon which will provide a nice base for our conquering of Greece.

Comments are appreciated, whether you have questions, idea's or suggestions as to what we should or could do next or even if your just reading this are all welcome. 34 views and no replies. Tsk tsk.

Here we go. Now we can get the ball rolling, here's the link to the save Pidgeon, have fun.

P.S Ishmall, download the save aswell and have a few turns and see how you cope, if you think your doing ok then say so and then we can fit you into the swap.
Sky Crusader

Well i have had my 15 turns and done quite well. i shall give you a quick AAR but it will be nothing like bens. Anywho here goes : I started off right were i thought i would cash less but thanks to ben stacking units it wasent as bad as i thought. The first thing that i had aimed to do was to take back the setelment that the Gaul Warband had stolen off ben and i was plesantly surprised when i saw that i had got all of the gate busting rams ready made. so basicaly went in with the Army and sustained very few casulties. Number one win for the us. The next set of events how ever were not as jubilent. First off the Greak navy decided to attack my few ships so loss foloed be loss folowed be loss and death of admaral. Then just to make things better they hit my other fleet which luckly escaped. i spent the next few turns building up and consentrating fources. so now i have an army consisting of two genarals and two other cavelry, four missile units and twelve Histati. So i head to the Greak city of Athens.but unluckly for me they had a large army there so i was facing them with 1435 to there 986 not to bad. yes well i got about ten minutes into the game and all i had managed to acomplish was a stail mate on the city walls and a few very burnt ram users that had failed to even get there so anouther ten mins went by but the hoplights were just to good i had no way to use my cavelry and the missle troupes had expended all of there javalins so i pulled out what i could and went back to the drawing bourd. a couple of turns later i went back and hit them hard took the city with minimal losses. To get the greaks back for there full harted ess i went and hit larisa a smaller city to the nourth and compleatly white whashed them. at least some of my pride restoured. Any way that is were i left it and unlike ben i still have some money so happy spending ben  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing

Neocryptic

Read through all these reports and forgot how totaly awesome RTW can be.

Am reinstalling it next week. Won't be taking part in the save file transfer but might post some reports of a mini campaign am having if anyone is interested.

Good luck with the Hoplite Twattings!

Neo.
Imshall

Ah come on Neo! You don't have to get in straight away but at least consider jumping in on it?

Either way would be cool to see how your campaign goes. Be interesting to see how it all unfolds and I might be able to grab some tips on how people play and manage commanding there empires so I'd certainly be interested!
Neocryptic

That's it though Immy, I'd probably send the armies back to Rome and screw up for 15 turns on an orgy of peace, vodka drinking and lazyness, then Rome would be ripe for an invasion from pretty much anyone...  Laughing

What about the idea of a duel 2 man campaign using the save file in the same vain, maybe Hazey and Pigeon and Me and Imshall (Eventually, in his own time). As I say I'll be installing on Monday.

Sound good?
haeZen

Yeah sure we could do that, but I think it'd be more interesting if we all played the same one, then we can get a good mix of different play styles in one game and then see how somebody else can adapt to what you've been given from the previous player.

Either way sounds good fun, we should start a Campaign at the same time and see who conquer's the world first! =D

Any who try not to break the bank.
haeZen

Bankruptcy is second nature to me now though. I normally keep my bank balance alive through enslave / exterminating settlements.

Alas, I shall change thy strategem.

Right let's see what I can do.

I bet the Macedon's betray me, I've never been good with Alliances.

haeZen,
Imshall

Macedonia! Phah!! I spit on them, worthless horse riding dogs can go and sit in a burning temple of Zeus for all I care!

I just destroyed them in my own campaign btw and they were a constant annoyance. Always assaulting this 1 settlement, had a large navy that kept on pounding mine to the bottom of the ocean.... good riddence to em all!
haeZen

Can't be hating completely on the Macedonians, they are for all intents and purposes being sincere to me in this Campaign and they also gave birth to Alexander the Great.

Right I've finally bothered to do my AAR on these 15 turns so here we go.

Small screen of our area's in and around Italy this is where Pidgeon had finished. On the map you can also see our territory in Greece.

Quite a few Retinue increases here, Oppius Brutus is indeed some sort of smart arse.

Such a small garrion in Sparta, yet it had the famed Spartans in the guard. I'll have to be smart to outwit the Son's of Hercules.

Profit's of 10k? Niiiice.

Stupid Rebel's given devastation to the lands around Athens, I decide to send em packing.

Except I leave none to run away..

This irks me a bit, our Allies with a respectable army near our near empty Salona. I keep my eye on them the next couple of turns.

The Gauls want a ceasefire. I agree so as to keep them away from me while im occupied in Greece.

I make the most of it and ask for Trade Right's.

I also sell my Map Info for a hefty price, because I hate them and hope they die of poverty rather than stain Roman steel.

And yes, they agreed. Lol uneducated Barbarians. Lol.

Green peace intervenes.

Hmm that Macedonian army is now in our lands...

Here's my army that's going to kick Greece's ass. Except I can't get through to Sparta by land cause the stupid Macedonians are blocking and being our Allies I can't attack - Well I can but best to keep friendly relations to save fighting 2 fronts. - and the Senate whines and I like the bonus' they give.

Another Senate mission.

I have 3 Spies in Sparta trying to lower Public Order, it's at 60% so they should rebel next turn. Then it'll be easy to take.

But it doesn't as they garrison their entire army into Sparta now meaning it's going to be a bitch to take. Bah.

Being a man who treats other's equally I give Germania an offer of Map Info for Map Info.

But they want Denarii for Map Info. Meh I got shedloads, I accept.

Turns out they are doing quite well.

I build a Watchtower at the corner of Salona's territory, it seems I might be sharing boarders with Germania soon.

Tarentum grows! Now we will have access to better equipment and Eco buildings.

Being a Conqueror at heart I build a ship and just sail my army round to Sparta as it appeases all parties for reasons mentioned earlier.

I decide to offer 5k Denarii for Military access, which basically means I can move my army through their lands without them whining.

The battle of Sparta. Is about to begin!

Except I forgot to take Screens of everything that happened during the battle for Sparta and Segestica.. oh and Pergamun... DOH!

I do apologise but I usually jsut get engrossed and forget im supposed to be taking screens. Sparta was a bloodbath, Segestica was easy and Pergamun needed some ass cream.

Well the Empire is strong i have over the 15 turns smashed the Greeks and have continued on to take over the Selucids.
To do this i have taken over Sardis, Halicarnassas, Rhodes. With this we now have a very strong foot hold in this region.
As usual the senit has been bossing us around so we also have Kydonia. With all of the setelments we have also taken over three wonders.

All in all things are going good we have sevaral alies and trade rights with many more. so the next step is up to you ben.

P.S look at how much money we have  Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil

haeZen

Ok so I did my turn... about a week ago so now im actually going to do my AAR and post the link to the save. Very Happy

So I load up the save and to be frank Pidgeon, I am disgusted! I strangled 5 babies because of this. Cities on Automanage? Taxes at Low? Excess money? Over 50k causes mass Corruption y'know and that's bad. Drugs are bad.

Sure we've got shedloads of money, but there is no need to be inefficient.

After about 20 minutes of tinkering through our cities taxes un-automanaging and taking units and buildings off our build queues that we don't need I manage to get this. See the increase in our income from the cities? Compare the 2 pictures.

Go ahead, rebel. I'll just exterminate when I take it back.

See this is what happen's when we have over 50k. We are losing 815 denarii to fat corrupt officials. That's just in this city, it may be worse elsewhere.

I was succesful at a Senate mission. Must've been Pidgeon. tsk tsk, always hostile.  Rolling Eyes

Here you see our Empire in Greece and expaning into Asia minor on the right.

That's right, I used 34k in one turn. But im still nowhere near the 50k mark.

Stupid Egyptians with their pointy beards.

Thermon decided to grow. I can throw alot of money at it now hopefully getting sub-50k.

Ha! There it is! Your 1 turn glory ends Egypt.

No, Vibius! I'd like to have everyone give 1 minute silence for Vibius. He was ownage in life and will most likely rape in death. GG. WP.

Pontus are being brave. Very brave.

Always accepted with wide open arms. We'll spend that on the ass cream they'll need when we open hostilities.

He will be a great general methinks! We have alot of time to bend him to our will.

Oh, this brought a cruel smile. And a Dr. Evil finger to mouth gesture.  Rolling Eyes

Yeah, cause that'll last long..

Planning my conquest's and it seem all my frickin Allies are favoured by the Senate. In can't find anyone in the surrounding area to conquer. It looks like my 15 turns are going to be War-wise uneventful. I won't even get a battle it seems.  Crying or Very sad

OMFG REBELS!!!

Very Happy

Well, what'd you expect?

I called it.

Key's to the vestal virgins pl0x.

All our Allies, honestly I've never had so many Allies and they are ALL in the surrounding area making conquering impossible as they are all liked by the Senate. Well not impossible but im trying to get full love of the Senate. Then we'll wipe them off the map.  Wink

With nobody nearby to attack I need to turn my sights elsewhere. It's coming to the end of my 15 turns and I need to conquer something.. Anything! I move a full stack and 2 General's to lead them in seperate ships North. To Scythia.  Rolling Eyes

Larissa grows. Now I can pump better stuff out of there.

Strangely we have more power than the Senate... in the Senate?  Shocked

I had a thought and that was to attack Thrace who were much closer than Scythia's lands. But to my dismay 1) Macedonia had taken it over and 2) We were allied with Thrace anyway. My god...

On gnoez. Plaguezomfg!!11!

Let the games begin!

I find a city to conquer finally! It's also Rebel owned so it'll be a piece of piss.

There it is! From a rather boring and uneventful 15 turns the greatest event for any Rome faction just so happened to turn it all around. Goddamnit! Now I've got to disband all the obsolete units replace them with the better one's cancel all unit queue's figure which one's with alot of exp should remain and who shouldn't. All in 1 turn? Blargh. Would be Pidgeon who get's the new toys... again.

I don't take pics of Rebel battle's but I thought this was funny. Bless em.

My 15th turn actually ended befoe the battle but I had to conquer something so I had a 16th turn. Razz

I kill they ass.

Well that's it basically. Nothing really happened I opened new asshole's on Rebel's but that was it, in 15 turns I had 2 battle's most of what I did was econmic building armies - Then Replacing them all - and building building's and generally trying to get rid of our massive cash surplus.

Oh and of course the Marius Reforms. Ftw.

Here's the save, Pidgeon.
