How is multiplayer accessed?
Pulling up Niko’s mobile phone anytime during your single-player game accesses the multiplayer in GTA. Using the in-phone menus you select multiplayer and drop into the game lobby. This means you can access multiplayer anytime during your single player campaign.
To access multiplayer hit up on the d-pad to bring up your cell phone, hit the A button to get to the menu, then go down and select the “multiplayer” option. From here you can choose Player Match (non-ranked games), Ranked (ranked matches), Party Mode (to play with up to 7 of your friends against other players), Player Model (to customize your appearance), and finally Tutorial (to learn the ropes).

How will in-game chat work?
While in a non-team multiplayer match you can talk with anyone playing at the current moment. You also have to option to call anyone playing for a private chat. In team-based gametypes you speak to your entire team. You may still call any player with your phone in team games.
Is there full co-op through the entire main campaign?
No, unfortunately not. There are co-op missions (in the “Hangman’s NOOSE gametype) you can engage in with up to 4 friends in multiplayer though.
What game modes are available to play in multiplayer?
*Deathmatch & Team Deathmatch – Your run of the muck deathmatch gametypes. Point, shoot, die, repeat. Instead of winning by kills you (or your team) win by cash earned. When you kill an opponent they drop cash you must collect in order to win the match. Remember to collect the cash!
*Hangman’s NOOSE (2-4 players) – Up to 4 player co-op mission. You and up to 3 of your friends engage in co-op missions. These missions have a bit of the main story feel to them with cutscenes, yet they are a separate entitiy.
*GTA Race (2-16 players) – A checkpoint-to-checkpoint race mode with guns.
Official Rockstar Explanation: "Similar to the orthodox Race, but with the added element of combat. Race and fight your way through the checkpoints in order and then hit the finish, but this time you can also pick up the weapons spawned en route to help take out your opponents. You can also exit the vehicle during the road races."
As Rockstar’s explanation states, this is a race mode where you hit checkpoints in a race to the finish. The difference comes when you realizes that weapons have been added to allow you to shoot your opponents or even steal their ride.
*Race (2-16 players) –
Official Rockstar Explanation: "Race to the finish through each checkpoint in order. If you take a wrong turn or mess up in some way, you can respawn your vehicle on the last checkpoint you passed. There is a large selection of races for cars, boats, and helicopters – you can choose laps and vehicle class/type.
This mode has two sub-modes: Free Race and Cannonball Run.
Free Race are point-to-point races. First one to reach the end point wins.
Cannonball Run are races where you have to traverse several checkpoints any way you can. "
*Cops ‘n Crooks (4-16 players) – Like a VIP gametype.
Official Rockstar Explanation: "A team-based mode in which the Crooks must get their Boss to safety, while the Cops have to take him down. The Boss is marked with a cross hair. This mode has two sub-modes: All for One and One for All.
In All for One, one team is made up of Crooks and a Boss, and the other team is made up of Cops. The Cops are trying to hunt down and kill the Boss while the Crooks are trying to protect him. The Cops win by killing the Boss and the Crooks win by getting the Boss safely to the getaway vehicle and escaping.
One for All is similar but there is no Boss. Here, the Cops win by killing all of the Crooks and the Crooks win by filling up a getaway vehicle with members of their team. Only 4 people can escape in the getaway vehicle. Players cannot respawn in this mode.
Both of these variations can be won by the Cops if they manage to destroy the getaway vehicle. "
*Mafiya Work (2-16 players) – Complete missions given out before the other players do.
*Team Mafiya Work (2-8 teams) – Complete missions before the other teams.
Official Rockstar Explanation:"You're a member of a crew doing contract work for the mafiya - including such plum gigs as escorting wanted men, picking up MacGuffins and stealing cars,. Work as a team to complete contracts before the time period ends and get the rewards. You'll probably want to do your best to scupper the other crew's work as well. Each contract you complete gives your team cash, and the crew with the most cash at the end of the round wins."
*Car Jack City (2-16 players) – Compete against the other players to get the car Petrovic wants first. If you have the car, deliver it to the specific area, if you don’t have the car, kill or jack it from the other player.
*Team Car Jack City (2-8 Teams)
Official Rockstar Explanation: "Cars spawn parked around the map and teams must steal them and take them to a drop off point. The cash teams get for dropping off stolen vehicles depends on their condition - teams get less cash the more damaged they are. The exception to this are special bonus cars, stuffed with drugs, which give a set amount of cash on delivery no matter how damaged they are. Your crew has to get hold of whatever vehicles the boss wants. Whichever crew makes the most money wins. Simple."
*Deal Breaker (2-4 players) – You and your crew (up to 4 players) are on a mission to bust in on a drug deal. Steal the drugs and dupe both parties out of the merchandise. Kill all members involved as well as the few that try to escape. Get you and your crew back to the starting house in the fastest possible time to complete the mission.
*Bomb da Base II (2-16 players) – A bomb planting game mode where you and your team fly to a boat in order to plant bombs.
*Turf War (4-16 players)
Official Rockstar Explanation: "A timed capture-the-base mode. There are a number of bases around the map that you have to take by standing on them for a short period of time. The more players that are on a base, the faster it can be captured. The more bases that your team owns, the faster your team’s cash score increases. If the rival gang is on or near a base, you won't be able to take control of it - so do what you can to try and... displace them. The team with the most cash at the end of the round wins."
*Free Mode (1-16 players) – You and up to 16 of your friends (or strangers) can enjoy life in Liberty City. Do whatever you please, steal cars, make jumps, fly choppers, whatever you would like to do!
What is the in-game multiplayer lobby like?
The lobby is not really a lobby at all. You basically go into a free roam area without police. You can then invite friends to play with you and bring them along into an actual gametype. Once in this free roam lobby you bring up your cell phone to invite friends and select the gametype you wish to join. If you don’t feel like playing any specific gametypes then stay in this “lobby” and roam around the entirety of Liberty City!
How do I play online with my friends?
Bring up your cell phone and go to the multiplayer option, from there select “Party Mode.” This will take you into a free roam gametype in which you can once again select your cell phone, go to friends and select the person, then select invite.
Once you have all the friends you want in your free roam, you can then return to the cell phone and select Player Match, or Ranked, pick a gametype and you and your friends will be instantly put into the match of your choice.
How do I create my own game with private slots?
Go into Party Mode using the same instructions as above (Go to the cell phone, multiplayer, party mode). Once in the party mode free roam go to your phone again and select player match, pick the gametype you wish to create, once you hit “A” on a gametype you will see an option for private slots, set this to however many friends you want to play with. From there you should be taken to a screen in which you can set all of the options for that gametype.
What options will be available to the host of the game?
The options available are as follows:
Turning cops on and off
Turning pedestrians on or off
Adjusting density of traffic
Adjusting weather options
Adjusting time of day
Picking what radio station plays during the game
Weapons selection and layout
Adjusting HUD to reveal/hide enemy locations
Speech settings – Teammates only
How will multiplayer characters work, can I be Niko?
No, you cannot be Niko from the story but you do get to create your own player (guy or girl) for multiplayer madness. You start out with some basic items for customization and unlock more as you rank up. Primarily there are these options to choose from:
Male or Female
4 head types
4 torso types
4 leg types
2 glasses types
6 hat types
How do the ranking system and unlocks work?
Ranking up to unlock customization items is fairly simple.
The rankings run from zero to ten in the “Ranked” playlist. Ranking up unlocks many new customizable options for your multiplayer character including clothing and accessories. To rank up you simply need to collect cash. The easiest ways to do this are to play modes like team deathmatch where the money drops when you kill an opponent.
Can you visit places such as strip clubs, bars, etc. in free roam or any multiplayer mode?
Unfortunately not, although the majority of people will not miss it. Why go to a bar to party when you can steal a bus to party on?
Is there clan or gang support in GTA’s Multiplayer?
No, clan or gang support is not included. You can play with your friends at any time though!
Is there split-screen in GTA Multiplayer?
No, split-screen is not available.
